June 26, 2004
Antoinette Zel, President, MTV Networks Latin America today announced that Miami Beach was selected for the third consecutive year as the home of the “2004 MTV Video Music Awards Latin America” to take place at The Jackie Gleason Theater. The third annual MTV VMALAs will air live in Latin America and on MTV2 in the US on Thursday, October 21. Following its premier, the event will be made available to all 42 MTV channels around the world, with the potential of reaching more than 400 million households in 163 territories.
“Going beyond the expected is always a clear goal and topping ourselves is always the challenge,” commented Antoinette Zel, President, MTV Networks Latin America. “Coming back to Miami for the 3rd time’s a charm and the Jackie Gleason Theater will once again set the stage for an exciting show. Miami is a cross roads for Latin America, and truly reflects the richness, irreverence, fun and authenticity of the Latin culture and market that we embrace every day.”
Surprise highlights from past VMALAs include: Kinky with Paulina Rubio performing KISS’ “I Was Made For Loving You”; “Los Black Stripes”, an unprecedented collaboration of Latin music royalty including Juanes, Ricky Martin; Charley Alberti from Soda Stereo, Vicentico from Fabulosos Cadillacs and Plastilina Mosh; and Argentinean Fernando Pena’s outrageous social commentary about HIV/Aids, politics and economics.
The “MTV Video Music Awards Latin America” reflects the music and attitude of youth in Latin America today bringing together a variety of regional Latin American pop and rock artists and international acts — making it a truly unique music experience. The event will air live throughout Latin America and on MTV2 in the US. Details of the show and participating talent will be announced in the weeks to come.
This year’s “MTV Video Music Awards Latin America” introduces the new category of “Hip-Hop International Artist” — raising the total number of categories to 17. The nominees for each category will be selected by a “Music and Video Academy” comprised of music industry professionals and MTV viewers. Winners for each category will be chosen by viewers. The voting process and deadline will be announced in the near future.
