La Verdadera Historia de Pedro Navaja @ Miami.

La Verdadera Historia de Pedro Navaja (The True Story of Pedro Navaja) crosses the waters of the Caribbean following triumphant presentations in Puerto Rico at the Centro de Bellas Artes in Caguas and the Centro de Bellas Artes in San Juan. The Spanish-language musical blockbuster makes its Florida premiere in the Au-Rene Theatre at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Friday, June 18 at 9 p.m. and Saturday, June 19 at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Featuring a stellar cast of more than 30 actors, this important musical work by renowned writer/director Pablo Cabrera is the only Puerto Rican play that has played continuously for more than a year in major cities such as Caracas, Venezuela, in addition to highly successful runs in Santo Domingo and New York. Cabrera will direct the Florida premiere and theatrical producer Lolyn Paz chose this stunning work to mark her return to theater after many years of dedicating her talents strictly to television.

La Verdadera Historia de Pedro Navaja, inspired by the great musical hit Pedro Navaja by singer/composer Rubén Blades, is a variation on the story about the big fish eating the little fish. With the political events of 1952 Puerto Rico as its backdrop – and in a corrupt atmosphere of gangsters and policemen, politicians and businessmen – a tale of love, jealousy and treachery takes shape in spectacular fashion.

Popular Latin singer/actor Gilberto Santa Rosa will bring the legendary title role to life, superbly backed by: Sully Díaz in the role of Diana la Maromera; Melina León as Betty McKenna; Elvis Crespo stealing hearts as the peasant Libertario FueRtes Labrador; and Raúl González, known from his appearances on Despierta América, as El Lince de la Barandilla.

“The Broward Center is extremely proud to be the first venue in the United States opening its doors to this production of La Verdadera Historia de Pedro Navaja with this superb cast in place,” said Mark Nerenhausen, president and CEO of Broward Center for the Performing Arts. “Following its immense success in Puerto Rico, we are sure that the South Florida audience will fall in love with this wonderful musical, which will include in its cast some of the best-known names in Latin music. We are extremely fortunate to be able to work with a producer of such superior creativity as Lolyn Paz, and to have the support of our sponsors and the media. The presentation of Pedro Navaja is an event that will make history in our community.”

La Verdadera Historia de Pedro Navaja boasts music and arrangements by Pedro Rivera Toledo, choreography by Julio Monge, costumes by Gloria Saéz, hair and makeup by Jorge Curras, and staging and lighting by Fernando Aguilú.
