La Raza Newspaper Awards Scholarship To Bilingual University.
April 24, 2004
La Raza Newspaper awarded $10,000 to support Latino students attending St. Augustine College, Chicago’s bilingual university.
La Raza Newspaper created the La Raza/Luis H. Rossi Scholarship Fund for students that have demonstrated academic excellence and require financial assistance to complete their education. This year, the scholarships were awarded to 10 students who are now able to continue in pursuit of their education.
The Scholarship Fund was created in honor of Mr. Luis H. Rossi for his 20 years of service as publisher of La Raza Newspaper and dedication to Chicago’s Latino community. Luis H. Rossi, former owner and publisher of La Raza Newspaper, is still heavily involved with Chicago’s leading Hispanic publication and proud to see La Raza provide such an opportunity for Hispanic students.
The La Raza/Luis H. Rossi Scholarship Fund was made possible through the support of clients and friends who advertised in the special commemorative recognition edition dedicated to Mr. Rossi for two decades of service as publisher this past October.
“It’s gratifying to assist our future community leaders by providing an opportunity for them to continue their education. Overcoming the challenge of gaining an education is one of the biggest problems facing the Hispanic community. I am proud that La Raza is making an effort to address this important concern,” said Mr. Luis H. Rossi.
With the support of its clients, La Raza Newspaper plans to increase the Scholarship Fund every year. “When you stop and realize how vital an education is in today’s world and when you see how our community suffers with one of the highest dropout rates, as the voice of the community for more than three decades, La Raza is compelled to do something,” stated Robert Armband, CEO and Publisher of La Raza Newspaper.
“Thus, every week La Raza publishes an education section. In addition, up to six times a year we provide special pull-out supplements offering a myriad of topics on gaining a proper education. We inherited this initiative from Mr. Rossi and have now made it our mission to empower our community with the need to educate its children,” added Mr. Armband.
La Raza congratulates the 2004 recipients of the La Raza/Luis H. Rossi Scholarship: Mr. Victor Yepes, Mr. Cesar E. Diaz, Mr. Darwin Gomez, Ms. Marlen Perez, Ms. Julia Cantor, Mr. Gabriel Vallejo, Mr. Manuel Duran, Mr. Armando España, Ms. Georgina Mendoza and Ms. Elizabeth A. Betancourt.
