Commemorating Tejano Heroes Of The Alamo.

TexasTejano.com, a San Antonio, Texas based research, marketing and publishing company, in conjunction with the Alamo Legacy & Missions Association (ALMA), announced that they kicked-off Texas History Month by debuting a commemorative poster entitled “Tejano Heroes of the Alamo” during a celebration ceremony on March 5 in front of the Alamo. During the ceremony, six hundred prints of the poster which portrays six extraordinary Tejano heroes of the Alamo and the battle for independence will be presented to local teachers from area schools that bear the name of each of the Tejano pioneers.

Founded by Rudi R. Rodriguez, TexasTejano.com has spent the last few months creating the poster with funds donated by major sponsor, Wal-Mart, to award to students at Texas elementary and middle schools as well as other educational institutions. The commemorative 18 x 24 poster portrays six Tejano pioneers: Gregorio Esparza, Lorenzo de Zavala, Toribio Losoya, Jose Navarro, Francisco Ruiz and Juan Sequin and describes their diverse contributions to Texas history. This poster joins the company’s existing product line which includes Tejano history materials such as books, videos and an educational traveling exhibit.

Rodriguez, who has been studying and researching Texas history for over twenty-five years, felt that it was time to further his mission of educating the public about the Tejano men and women who first settled in south Texas in the early 1700s and felt the not-so-well known participants of the Alamo battle were a natural choice. He and his company joined forces with ALMA in January of this year to make the vision possible. TexasTejano.com has already successfully published and marketed two books, a documentary and a poster based on the life of Jose Policarpio “Polly” Rodriguez, one of the first settlers of Texas.

“With the publicity surrounding the release of ‘The Alamo’ movie, we thought it was important to remind the public that heroic actions during the battle for independence were not limited to names we are familiar with like Crockett and Houston,” says Rodriguez. “There were many Tejano defenders and pioneers whose sacrifices were integral to the victory and they deserve recognition as well. Texas history would never be complete without including the stories of these Tejanos.”
