Louis Sito, publisher of Hoy and Tribune Publishing vice president/Hispanic media, today announced that veteran journalist Reynaldo Mena has been appointed editor in chief of Hoy’s Los Angeles edition, which will debut in March. Publishing executive Juan Arango has been appointed general manager.
“Reynaldo brings extensive editorial experience and a great understanding of the issues that are important to the Los Angeles Hispanic community,” said Sito. “Through his work with several other Spanish-language newspapers, he has a clear perspective on the type of news and information Hispanic readers seek every day.”
Mena is a native of Mexico and joins Hoy from Excelsior, a Spanish-language weekly published by the Orange County Register, where he was editor from 1999 to 2003. Before that, he was a reporter and later assistant editor for Nuevo Mundo, a Spanish-language weekly published by the San Jose Mercury News, from 1996 to 1999. From 1994 to 1996, Mena was a reporter for La Estrella, a bilingual weekly section of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. From 1993 to 1994, he was editor of El Hispanic News in Dallas. Early in his career he was editor for a bimonthly sports publication called Superestrellas del Basquetbol and a copy editor for El Nacional, both in Monterrey, Mexico.
“I’m looking forward to bringing a new editorial voice to Los Angeles,” said Mena. “The Hoy editorial team will focus on local news from throughout the Los Angeles area, Orange County and the Valley to provide Hispanics with relevant, timely community news.”
Arango, a native of Colombia, has been appointed general manager for the Los Angeles edition, and will retain his title and responsibilities as senior vice president/editorial and operation for Hoy nationally. Arango joined Hoy in January 1999 as editor in chief and was later promoted to vice president of operations and general manager in 2000.
“Juan is a strong manager with a successful track record,” said Sito. “His significant publishing experience in Colombia and editorial and operational experience with Hoy in New York make him the perfect fit for Hoy’s Los Angeles edition.”
“Los Angeles represents the nation’s largest Hispanic population,” said Arango. “I’m excited about bringing Hoy’s quality content to readers and providing advertisers with a new vehicle to reach Hispanic consumers.”
Hoy will be introduced in Los Angeles in March
