mun2 television Gets An EMMY.

mun2 television was honored with an Emmy award for best entertainment program by the Suncoast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for its special titled “Clandestino: Manu Chao.” The announcement was made at the 2003 Suncoast Regional Emmy Awards held last Saturday at the Eden Roc Resort and Spa.

The Manu Chao special, produced by Anthony Perez from Perfect Image Productions, was a one-hour concert featuring renowned rocker Manu Chao. Cited in Rolling Stone as the multilingual Bob Marley, Manu Chao songs mix socio-political commentary music with infectious rhythms inspired by the world he lives in.

“We are thrilled to receive this award, and we thank our colleagues for this wonderful recognition,” said Yolanda Foster, Vice President of programming at mun2. “More importantly, we congratulate Perfect Image for developing an electrifying program that offered insight, inspiration and passion.”

The mun2 original production was filmed in London and highlighted the life of Manu Chao, featuring songs from his most recent production: “Próxima Estación…Esperanza”, which has sold has sold over 2 million copies worldwide since its launch. Manu Chao was born in Paris on July 21, 1961, to a Galician man living in exile in France to escape Franco’s dictatorship. His beginnings in music were with the bands Hot Pants and Los Carayos. Then, together with his cousin Santiago Casariego, he created the Mano Negra group in 1987, which produced his first hit, “Mala Vida”. Shortly after an extended and exhausting tour throughout Latin America –which included Colombian villages besieged by guerrillas and drug-traffickers– the group broke up. In 1998 he made a comeback with “Clandestino,” an album inspired by his long stay in Latin America and Africa. “
