September 9, 2003
The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) recently announced that Los Angeles-based television station Univision 34 KMEX-TV is one of 10 finalists for an Emmy Award in the Community Service category with its service campaign, “34 A Su Lado” [34 On Your Side]. NATAS will present its Public and Community Service Emmy Awards at a luncheon held at the Essex House in New York City on Thursday, October 23, 2003.
“34 A Su Lado”
This year’s nomination, “34 A Su Lado” is Univision 34’s third national Emmy nomination since 1997. The on-going “34 A Su Lado” campaign serves as the Los Angeles Latinos’ monthly lifeline that provides a real-time resource for people to speak with experts and get counsel on issues that affect their daily lives such as immigration, education and employment, among many others. The “34 A Su Lado” toll-free phone bank begins to function at the start of Univision 34’s local evening news at 6 p.m. and continues to operate for five hours through Primetime, until the end of late local newscast at 11 p.m. In 2002, more than 800,000 calls were received at the “34 A Su Lado” toll-free hotline between the time period of the program’s launch on September 27, 2002 and its last campaign for the calendar year, which ran in November 2002.
