Discovery En Español Celebrates Hispanic Heritage.

Discovery en Español will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 – October 15, 2003, with four new specials: Treasure and Death: Secrets of the Moche Tomb (September 20 at 9 PM ET/PT), an exploration of the discovery of a compound under the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon on Peru’s northern coast; Miss Venezuela: Beauty Queen Machine (September 27 at 9 pm ET/PT), an inside look at the biggest beauty pageant in Latin America; Alvaro Mutis (October 4 at 9 PM ET/PT), a profile of the popular Colombian writer; and Gabriel Garcia Marquez: Bewitched Writing (October 11 at 9 PM ET/PT), a poetic exploration of the legendary writer’s most famous works.
These specials will have their U.S. premieres on Friday and Saturday evenings on Discovery en Español during four themed weekends under the banner Nuestra Herencia Hispana (Our Hispanic Heritage). Each week will highlight one theme: La Tierra (Land), La Mujer (Women), La Cultura (Arts) and El Triunfo (Triumph), honoring the triumph of the human spirit.

Friday and Saturday, September 19 and 20, programming on Discovery en Espanol will reflect La Tierra (Land), exploring the wonders of archaeology, nature and conquest in the Andes, the Yucatan Peninsula, ancient Peru and the “New World” of Mexico and Central America.
Treasure and Death: Secrets of the Moche Tomb (Secretos de las Tumbas Monche), explores one of the newest and most exciting archaeological discoveries in Latin America: the compound beneath the mighty Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon on the northern coast of Peru. In this program, archaeologist Santiago Uceda excavates the crypts beneath the Pyramids –the biggest mud brick structures ever built — to tell a story of savagery, brilliance and mystery, unraveling the lives of the Moche people. Treasure and Death: Secrets of the Moche Tomb makes its U.S. premiere on Saturday, September 20 at 9 PM ET/PT.
Programming on September 26 and 27 will focus on La Mujer (Women). From political protegees to movie legends, Discovery en Espanol profiles the women whose beauty, vigor and intelligence symbolize the female strength of Hispanic culture.
Miss Venezuela: Beauty Queen Machine (Miss Venezuela: Fabrica de Reinas) takes an inside look at the Miss Venezuela Pageant, the biggest beauty contest in Latin America. Viewers will discover the secrets of preparation for this important and fiercely competitive event. Miss Venezuela: Beauty Queen Machine has its U.S. premiere on Saturday, September 27 at 9 P.M. ET/PT. On Friday, October 3 and Saturday, October 4, Discovery en Espanol will look at La Cultura (Arts), demonstrating how profound inspiration and unique experiences shape the music, literature and architecture of the diverse and progressive Latin arts world.
Alvaro Mutis is a one-hour documentary on the acclaimed Colombian writer. The writer shares intimate details of his life, his writing, his friendship with Gabriel Garcia Marquez and his incarceration in a Mexican prison during the 1950s. Mutis explains the profound personality and nuances of his key character, Maqroll el Gaviero. Alvaro Mutis has its U.S. premiere on Saturday, October 4 at 9 PM ET/PT.
Finally, on Friday, October 10 and Saturday, October 11, programming will explore El Triunfo (Triumph), portraying grand and humble triumphs in sports, politics, creativity and survival.
Gabriel Garcia Marquez: Bewitched Writing (Gabriel Garcia Marquez: La Escritura Embrujada) goes up close and personal with the legendary writer. From his house in Cartagena, Colombia, Gabriel Garcia Marquez portrays his vision of the world: a combination of the supernatural and realistic, which is evident in his literature. The film poetically explores excerpts from his famed writings, such as One Hundred Years of Solitude. Gabriel Garcia Marquez: Bewitched Writing has its U.S. premiere on Saturday, October 11, at 9 PM
