June 14, 2003
Beginning with the 74th All-Star Game on July 15, ABC Radio Networks and ESPN will team up to produce Spanish-language broadcasts of Major League Baseball’s biggest games of the year. The productions, which will be branded ESPN Deportes Radio, will also feature full coverage of Major League Baseball’s League Championship Series and World Series later in the year.
ESPN Deportes Radio will offer a unique broadcast for each game, with its own on-site production team featuring Spanish-language play-by-play, analysis, interviews, and commercials. Commentators for the All-Star Game will include Hall of Fame broadcaster and longtime radio voice of the Dodgers’ Spanish- language broadcasts, Jaime Jarrin, as well as Roberto Clemente Jr, a veteran of Spanish-language television broadcasts for ESPN and the Yankees. Hector Molina, the radio voice of the White Sox Spanish-language broadcasts, will conduct player interviews and file reports from the field.
“Baseball is one of the most popular sports among Hispanics and ESPN is the leading multimedia sports entertainment company in the U.S.,” said Ken Mayer, vice president of finance and international operations for ABC Radio Networks, which owns the exclusive Spanish-language radio rights to the All-Star Game, League Championship Series, and World Series. “This collaboration makes perfect sense and it is a great service to offer the Hispanic sports fan.”
“We’re excited that the ESPN Deportes brand is now evolving to include radio broadcasts,” said Lino Garcia, general manager, ESPN Deportes. “Along with our Sunday night television block and our website ESPNdeportes.com, we now have three primary services that reach out to the Hispanic sports fan.”
“This is a great first step in the effort for ABC Radio and ESPN Deportes to jointly provide more radio content to the U.S. Hispanic marketplace,” said Oscar Ramos, general manager, ABC Radio International. “We plan to offer more Spanish-language programming as this relationship develops.”
Major League Baseball on ESPN Deportes Radio will be distributed nationwide by the Latino Broadcasting Company. The All-Star Game will be carried by affiliates in many of the top Hispanic markets including Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, and San Diego.
