May 24, 2003
Cristina Aby-Azar has been named managing editor of The Wall Street Journal Americas, an international business-news section published by Dow Jones & Company for partner newspapers throughout Latin America.
Ms. Aby-Azar, formerly deputy managing editor of the Journal Americas, succeeds Edward Schumacher, who is leaving Dow Jones after nine years to become chief executive and editorial director of Meximerica Media, a new company with plans to publish Spanish-language daily newspapers in Texas and elsewhere.
“Cristina’s 10 years of experience in business journalism in Brazil and her strong management experience at The Wall Street Journal Americas make her the best candidate to take the editorial helm of the Journal Americas,” said William E. Casey Jr., vice president of special editions at The Wall Street Journal. “Ed Schumacher has played a key role in the growth of The Wall Street Journal Americas since its launch in 1994. We thank him for his important contributions and wish him all the best in his new endeavor.”
In her new role, Ms. Aby-Azar will be responsible for the news operations of the Journal Americas, which appears in 18 newspapers in 16 countries with total circulation of 1.7 million. The Journal Americas, published in Spanish and Portuguese, includes news from The Wall Street Journal and its international editions, adapted and edited for Latin America.
Ms. Aby-Azar joined the Journal Americas in 1997 to launch the Portuguese-language edition. Prior to joining Dow Jones, she worked for 10 years for Gazeta Mercantil, the leading business newspaper in Brazil. She holds a degree in journalism from Faculdade Casper Libero in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
