Arbitron Compiles Commuting Profiles For 286 Metros.

Arbitron Inc. announced that it has compiled detailed commuting profiles for 286 Metros, utilizing Census 2000 and Arbitron data to provide valuable information to the radio industry about commuters’ travel time, time of departure, method of getting to work and time spent listening to radio.

What’s in Each Profile

Travel Time – Commuting time is broken out in increments, starting with less than 15 minutes and going up to 60 minutes or more. Average travel time in the Metro is also available.

Time of Departure – From the early birds to the swing-shift workers, the profiles have everyone covered.

Method of Getting to Work – Workers are categorized according to whether they drive to work alone, carpool, use public transportation, walk to work, work at home, or use another means of getting to their workplace.

Time Spent Listening (TSL) to Radio – Drivers’ average TSL during their morning commutes is presented in the profile.
Commuting Facts that May Surprise You

The champion carpoolers in the U.S. reside in Santa Maria-Lompoc, CA, where 20.1 percent of the working population carpools.

Sussex, NJ, residents are the nation’s leading road warriors: 24.5 percent of them have commutes of an hour or more, three times the U.S. average for such a lengthy commute.

Small-town residents work close to home. Metros in which 44 percent or more of residents have commutes under 15 minutes have an average population of 130,145.

People who live in the Clarksville-Hopkinsville, TN-KY Metro are the earliest early birds in the United States: 23.3 percent leave home before 6AM to get to work.

“The commuting profiles will help radio stations better understand when their listeners are leaving home and how long it’s taking them to get to work,” said Dan Estersohn, senior demographer for Arbitron. “That information will help them and their advertisers identify new opportunities that go beyond the usual 7:30-8:30 crunch.
