US Digital Divide Among Youth.

According to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), 65% of children in the US, ages two to 17, use the Internet either at home, at school or some other location. The CPB commissioned Grunwald Associates to survey parents and children in 2002. The study determined, however, that despite the strong Internet penetration rate among kids in the US in general, there exists a significant at-home Net access divide among different ethnicities. The study determined that 49% Caucasian kids have Internet access at home, whereas just 33% of Hispanic children and 29% of African American children do as well.

The UCLA Center for Communication Policy reported last month that the increasing number of libraries making the Net available to kids has meant that the number of children under the age of 18 who they go online from “somewhere else” besides home or school has jumped from 20.6% in 2000 to 60% last year.
