Telemundo War Coverage.

Telemundo was the first U.S. Spanish broadcast network to report an attack on Baghdad. Telemundo news anchors – Pedro Sevcec and Ana Patricia Candiani – first to break the news to the U.S. Hispanic audience that the war against Iraq had begun, interrupting network programming at 9:35 pm ET, other networks followed.

Sevcec’s first remarks were: “This is a special bulletin of Telemundo Network News. The anti aircraft sirens are sounding in Baghdad. The sirens are sounding and these are the images from the Capital of Baghdad at 5:35 am, 9:35pm U.S. eastern time.”

Telemundo was also the first U.S. Spanish-language television network with LIVE satellite reports from its correspondents in Kuwait, Qatar, and by phone from Baghdad. With NBC News’ support — the network plans to continue its extensive coverage on both the Telemundo Network and Telemundo Internacional, which is seen throughout Latin America.

Telemundo’s KVEA in Los Angeles 11pm news was the only news organization in Southern California doing a war-related story on “Was it Saddam or a Double?” The affiliate also aired a special report from the Mexico-California border on security procedures and a one-hour special newscast devoted to Iraq and the impact on Latinos in the region, including live interviews with experts on job outlook, analysis on immigration politically and geographically as well as a report on religion and war.

In Houston, Telemundo local station KTMD Channel 48 broadcasted a series of commercial-free stories focusing on different local exclusives including new Port of Houston security measures; local military families as soldiers depart for Iraq, and new airport security procedures.

Since United States is utilizing the most sophisticated military technology ever used in a war, Telemundo is committed to its Hispanic audience to provide special reports on weapons systems, including chemical and biological warfare experts, as well as former U.S. General and government officials. Telemundo’s correspondents are co-deployed with NBC News staff to enhance the network news coverage utilizing modern technology to cover the war front.

Veteran Telemundo correspondent Pablo Gato will continue his live reports from Kuwait, reporter Fran Sevilla from Baghdad, reporter Elias Zaldivar from Israel and reporters Allan Villanfana and Fernando Mejia from Qatar. NBC News correspondent Kerry Sanders will continue to provide support to Telemundo from Kuwait.
