Wendy’s Celebrates Bilingualism In NYC.

Over 40 fifth graders from all over New York City will be competing for a computer system and other prizes at the city’s first annual Wendy’s Deletree Conmigo Spelling Competition. The students, representing elementary schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens, were chosen by their teachers through classroom competitions or merit and will have a chance to test their spelling skills in front of parents, teachers and community leaders. Words in both Spanish and English will be randomly chosen by honorary judges to help illustrate each student’s grasp of both languages.

BACKGROUND:

The Wendy’s Deletree Conmigo Spelling Bee program is a bilingual spelling bee competition and curriculum-enhancing program that is geared toward students in grade 5. Launched in Fresno and Chicago in 2002, the competition was expanded to New York, Miami and Houston in 2003 to encourage participation in the country’s major cities that boast large Hispanic populations. The program was created by Wendy’s to demonstrate its commitment to strengthening ties with the Hispanic community through educational initiatives.
