Estefans & Prisa To Produce TV Series.
January 11, 2003
Estefan Television Productions, the production company of musical impresario Emilio Estefan, and Plural Luna Entertainment, film and TV production company of Spanish multimedia corporation Grupo PRISA, have signed a deal to co-produce television content for the U.S. market. The deal between the two entities, whose united efforts will be branded as Plural Luna, will allow for the creation and execution of original TV series and other quality programming destined for a Hispanic audience, a market of 40 million. The first three products spawned by this alliance are already in production. Two are TV series: the first uses the music world as a backdrop and the second is a drama series based on a family of lawyers; the third project is a talk show.
The responsible parties of each company are confident that the deal will make Plural Luna a leading name in the U.S. television sector. Emilio Estefan affirms that he is ?proud to have been given the opportunity to continue stimulating the growth of the vibrant Hispanic market and, in turn, encourage the development of our culture in the United States.? ?I am convinced,? he continued, ?that this synergy will allow us to reach our objective of bringing innovative, quality productions. We are working with a great team and that is always the best beginning for any new venture.?
Luis Merino, CEO of Plural Luna, believes that ?creating a successful company requires strong alliances with those at the top of their sector and, without a doubt, Emilio Estefan has confirmed his reputation as a pioneer in the thriving and vital Hispanic market, whose potential has extended far beyond any doubts.?
Emilio Estefan, aside from his brilliant career as a musical composer and performer, has also become one of the most important producers in the music world, opening doors to the Anglo market for stars of Latin music from Gloria Estefan to Ricky Martin or Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. His latest production was Especial de Navidad, a Christmas special that Univision broadcast last December.
Since opening in the U.S., Plural Luna has developed different projects aimed at the Hispanic audience. It has co-produced two Mexican box-office smashes: ?La Habitación Azul? and ?El Tigre de Santa Julia? and consolidated its position in the Mexican market when it inked a film production deal with Televisa Cine, with whom they are currently preparing a film adaptation of Arturo Pérez Reverte?s novel ?La Reina del Sur?. Plural Luna also produced the documentary, ?Caminantes?, directed by Fernando León, official selection of the New York Latin Film Festival. It is also currently wrapping the editing on ?Ciudadano Escobar?, directed by Colombian helmer Sergio Cabrera. In Spain, Plural Luna is broadcasting a talk-show and a game show for a chain of local television stations and has completed a series entitled ?10 Minute Cuisine? with one of the world?s most renowned chefs, Ferran Adriá.
