Telemundo Nominated For Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media Award.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) recently notified Telemundo that they had nominated the network for its innovative approach to programming that included airing “Daniela,” a Mexican novela which featured a multi-dimensional portrayal of a transgender woman.

In the novela Roger (Alejandra de la Mora), Daniela’s stepbrother who had left for Brazil several years earlier, returned and much to everyone’s surprise, rejoined the family as Renata. Her arrival spurs an emotional crisis among her parents and sisters, exposing a hot topic that society has a hard time understanding and accepting: transsexualism.

Renata is rejected by her parents, when they can’t come to terms with her new persona. She feels lonely and misses her loved ones’ support during a vulnerable period in her life. Now, the only person she can count on is her half-sister, Daniela, who got her family to talk openly about the issue, understand it, and realize that despite it all, Renata is still part of the family and needed to be accepted.

The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor the media for their presentation of fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect our lives. Nearly 1,000 media projects were considered in 23 categories.
