Maseca is one of the key sponsors of the Antorcha Guadalupana Mexico-New York 2002, a highly spirited cross-country relay marathon that began in Mexico City on October 29th at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Ana Gevara, world famous Mexican athlete was the first runner on the inauguration of the relay marathon, carrying the torch that will travel across Mexico to the U.S. and will end at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City on December 12th. The torch will arrive in time for the key Mexican celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe in New York. Three thousand runners are estimated to join the torch at the last segment of the journey.

“Maseca is proud to participate in the international Antorcha Guadalupana Mexico-New York 2002 marathon. It is an opportunity to unite the spirits of two sister countries in preparation for one of the most important celebrations for Mexicans which is the day of Our Lady of Guadalupe”, commented Mr. Alberto González, Marketing Director for Azteca Milling, the maker of Maseca. “For many Mexicans living in the United States it is very important to keep our traditions alive. And since Maseca has been a part of Holiday traditions for many years, the partnership of this event came natural”, he added.

The Antorcha Guadalupana torch has traveled through Mexico and Texas and is planned to continue through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and finally through New Jersey.
