July 20, 2002
Kathleen M. Waltz, president and CEO of Orlando Sentinel Communications, announced the appointment of Anibal Torres as publisher of El Sentinel and elSentinel.com, effective immediately. Waltz also appointed Torres a director of Orlando Sentinel Communications. In this new role Torres will have overall responsibility for the weekly bilingual newspaper and its companion Web site, and will oversee their business and advertising functions.
“This announcement emphasizes Orlando Sentinel Communications’ commitment to Central Florida’s thriving Hispanic community,” said Waltz. “Anibal’s extensive advertising and marketing expertise, superb management skills and
active community involvement have helped make El Sentinel a success in a very short period of time. Anibal is the right person to serve as El Sentinel’s first publisher and take the newspaper and Web site to new heights.”
“I am very excited about this new opportunity,” noted Torres. “To me it is a confirmation of both the strength of El Sentinel and the economic power of Central Florida’s growing Hispanic market. We are positioned to grow El
Sentinel and ensure that it continues to be the primary source of news and information for our Hispanic community. We want to make sure our newspaper and Web site meet the needs of both our readers and advertisers.”
Prior to his appointment as publisher, Torres was division manager for regional advertising for Orlando Sentinel Communications. In this position he served as sales manager for El Sentinel and elSentinel.com and oversaw the Orlando Sentinel’s newspaper advertising sales operations in Osceola, Lake and Volusia counties. Torres joined Orlando Sentinel Communications in 1996. Torres began his career in sales in the Puerto Rico office of McGraw Hill. Later he advanced to Managing Director/Latin America for the company in Panama City, Panama, and New York. He moved to Orlando in 1991 to serve as president of Cosmos Hispanic Radio.
