The ad — which features simply a vertical American flag with two red stripes now black representing the Twin Towers and the words “In Memoriam” at the bottom — was created by Lowe, New York. Executive Creative Director Dean Hacohen and Executive Director of Media Services Alan Jurmain reached out to NAA to help distribute the image to newspapers. The ad also is being run in the September issue of several magazines.

“Finding an appropriate way to mark the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks has been a challenge to many of our members,” noted NAA Chief Marketing Officer John E. Kimball. “We felt that this ad makes a quiet but powerful statement about the turbulence and impact of that day, and we wanted to be sure that those of our members who wanted to run it can get it easily and without cost.”

The ad, which includes a discreet creditline noting that it is courtesy of “this publication,” is available in 4 columns-by-13-inches and full-page versions for standard and 50-inch web formats.

“Advertising creatives are communicators at heart. This was a unique opportunity to express ourselves, not on behalf of an airline or toothpaste, but simply as a tribute to the victims of 9/11. The piece was designed to help all of us pause for a moment of reflection, a moment of remembrance. Hopefully, it will do just that,” commented Hacohen.

NAA is a nonprofit organization representing the $55 billion newspaper industry and more than 2,000 newspapers in the U.S. and Canada. Most NAA members are daily newspapers, accounting for 87 percent of the U.S. daily circulation.
