CNN en Español # 1 News Network In LatAM.
July 22, 2002
For the third straight year, CNN en Español is the undisputed leader among pan-regional news networks according to the latest TGI Latina study. The network also ranks fifth overall among all cable networks – up three spots from TGI Latina’s last release. This placement is out of a total possible 223 local and pan-regional cable networks measured among persons aged 12 and over within the multi-channel universe.
Its year-to-year viewership growth has far out paced pan-regional competitors such as BBC World, Bloomberg, CNBC, MSNBC, Sur and Telemundo International.
On a country-by-country basis, CNN en Español ranks as the number one news network in Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Panama and Venezuela. The network ranks number three in Argentina and number two in Brazil, and shows a faster growth trend than its local competitors in each market: TodoNoticias, CronicaTV and CVN in Argentina, and Globo News in Brazil.
Throughout the region, the interest in the ‘News’ genre, more specifically ‘International News,’ has steadily increased as well. In comparing this year’s TGI Latina release with the previous one, frequent viewing of the ‘International News’ genre has increased by roughly 8%. The global events of the last year have in part fueled this growth – the economic and political crisis in Argentina, the political instability in Venezuela, international terrorist activities and threats, the Palestine-Israeli conflict, the volatility of the financial markets and sporting events such as The World Cup, to name a few – and people continue to turn to CNN en Español to fulfill their news needs. In addition, ongoing country-specific programming initiatives such as Noticias México and the network’s in-depth coverage of the Argentine economic situation have also helped to grow CNN en Español’s viewing audience.
“We are very pleased with the results that confirm CNN en Español as the news leader in Latin America; pan- regionally, CNN en Español reaches more viewers on a weekly basis than any other news network,” said Pablo Verdin, vice president of research for TBS Latin America, Inc. “Two particular bright spots where we have seen tremendous increases are in Argentina, where we have seen 84% growth, and in Mexico where we have seen 76% growth.”
Christopher Crommett, executive vice president and general manager of CNN en Español, added: “We at CNN en Español take our responsibility to our viewers very seriously, and always strive to bring them the most relevant and credible news in as timely a manner possible. It is indeed gratifying to know that we are accomplishing that mission, and people across Latin America trust us as their number one network source for news.”
