Upfront Day 2: Telemundo Programming & NBC Synergies 2002 – 2003.
April 20, 2002
Telemundo President & CEO James McNamara announced the new schedule at Telemundo’s 2002-2003 Upfront presentation to advertisers at the Beacon Theater in New York City. “The synergies produced from our partnership with the NBC Television Network will unlock the potential for Telemundo to become the dominant force in the Hispanic television marketplace, not only in viewership and advertising revenues, but also in our influence in the Hispanic audience,” McNamara said.
Those synergies already are taking effect, as Mr. McNamara announced to the advertising community that the Olympic Games are coming to Telemundo. Starting with the Games of the 28th Olympiad, to be held in Athens in 2004, and including the Winter Games in Torino, Italy in 2006 and the Summer Olympics in Beijing in 2008.
“Those synergies allow Telemundo greater reach and resources, increased investment in original programming and the expansion in the number and quality of specials and movies for broadcast. It also brings us the ability to share news facilities, equipment, technical staff and talent. For instance, Maria Celeste Arrarás, the icon in Hispanic news who joined us last month as the anchor of our 5 PM newsmagazine, ‘Al Rojo Vivo,’ will be a featured correspondent on the ‘Today’ show and ‘Dateline.’
NOVELAS – Telemundo has entered into unprecedented ventures with TV Globo of Brazil, Mexico’s Argos Television, Caracol TV and RTI of Colombia and Promofilm in the U.S., to bring viewers thousands of hours of spellbinding (and admittedly habit-forming) novelas. The story that brought Brazil to a standstill in 1988 with its riveting twists and turns, now is being adapted for the U.S. Hispanic audience and is poised to captivate millions of viewers in the United States. “Vale Todo” (All’s Fair) is the story of a beautiful, kind-hearted young woman, whose tireless fight for her family, love and happiness is challenged by murder, corruption and the schemes of an evil daughter. Itati Cantoral, Ana Claudia Talancon, and Diego Berti star in the milestone first novela to be produced in Spanish by TV Globo, the premier novela producer in the world. Telemundo presents Spanish television’s first-ever teen drama; a realistic look at the problems, romances, hopes and conflicts facing Hispanic teenagers in the U.S. today. “Los Teens” (The Teens) follows the lives of six high school friends, three boys and three girls: jocks and top students; flirts and introverts; some facing unrequited love within the group and some having problems at home; all trying to fit in and thrive in today’s America. An eagerly awaited sequel to the epic “Terra Nostra” comes to Telemundo with the launch of “Terra Esperanza” (Land of Hope), from the team that created “El Clon” and “Terra Nostra.” “Poliladrón” (Police-Thief), featuring actor Manolo Cardona, is the story of two very different people: Veronica, a young, smart, dedicated and brilliant police officer; and Gustavo, a scam artist and career criminal, who find themselves not only forced to work together, but also falling in love, their relationship constantly challenged by murder, vengeance and two very different outlooks on life. Revenge is such a powerful force, sometimes even death can’t hold it back. “La Venganza” (The Revenge), starring novela superstars Gabriella Spanic (“La Usurpadora”) and Jose Angel Llamas (“Protagonistas de Novela”), is the story of Helena, a woman who suffers a fatal heart attack on her wedding day after finding her husband making love to her sister. She vows vengeance in her final moments and is reincarnated in the body of Valentina, who turns out to be her long-lost daughter. “Corazón de Alcachofa” (Artichoke Heart) tells of a war between families, a battle in which love and desire, the struggle for power and money and settling old scores is carried to a new generation. The Franco-Estrada family’s wealthy and idyllic existence dramatically changes the day an unexpected guest, Adrian Espino, enters their lives. “Adrian Esta de Visita” (Adrian is Coming to Visit) is an intense novela that blends romance, suspense and the mysterious world of the supernatural.
REALITY – “Protagonistas de Novela,” the first-ever reality genre show in Spanish-language television history, became a blockbuster hit when it debuted this past season, setting all-time ratings records for Telemundo among the coveted teen and young adult demos. Now, the Network presents a can’t-miss new version of that series, “Protagonistas de la Musica” (Music Stars), in which 14 talented musicians and singers (seven men and seven women) are voluntarily held “captive” in a television studio for weeks, competing against each other to win a recording contract. The limits of a person’s physical, mental and emotional endurance are tested on “El Conquistador del Fin del Mundo,” a stunning international competition among 60 participants from five countries, all racing to be the first to reach an island near the South Pole in fewer than 40 days. The show pits men and women against mother nature – and each other – in one of the most inhospitable places on the face of the planet. Telemundo takes Hispanic viewers to “La Isla de la Tentación” (Temptation Island), an unforgettable island paradise where Latino couples test the strength of their relationships and encounter unexpected rivalries, experiencing passion, jealousy, love, and…temptation. Telemundo and Fox Television Studios have entered into a first-of-its-kind primetime series commitment to bring new Spanish-language episodes of the reality series, “Temptation Island,” to Telemundo.
SPECIALS – “The Golden Globe Awards En Español,” the first time the biggest Hollywood party of the year and the exciting precursor to the Academy Awards will be presented in Spanish. In another of the synergies created by Telemundo’s acquisition by NBC, Hispanic audiences now can share in the fun and drama when America’s favorite movies and television shows, along with their stars, vie for the coveted Golden Globe.
MUSIC SPECIALS – In May 2003, the “Billboard Latin Music Awards” will return to Telemundo for the fifth consecutive year. The recent 2002 “Latin Billboard Awards,” broadcast May 12 on Telemundo, featured Celine Dion, singing in Spanish for the first time, and Marc Anthony, Juan Gabriel, Thalia and Olga Tanóñ. The undisputed queen of salsa, Celia Cruz, makes her Telemundo debut in a tribute concert: “Celia Cruz: ¡Azucar!” This two-hour musical extravaganza will feature the top stars in the Spanish and English-speaking world as they pay musical tribute to the enormous musical and humane legacy of this Cuban salsera. The success of Latin music stars is celebrated in the presentation of “The Ritmo Latino Music Awards – El Premio de la Gente.” It’s the only award show in Latin music where the public selects winners in a nationwide voting process, choosing from 15 different categories, including pop, ranchero, regional, tejano, salsa, merengue and Spanish rock. The show features scintillating live performances by some of the top stars in Latin music. “Calle Ocho” is the single largest Hispanic celebration in the United States, an annual 23-block-long fiesta in Miami’s “Little Havana,” attracting revelers from all over the world.
HOLIDAY SPECIALS – Telemundo proudly presents the epic re-creation of one of the most moving miracles in the history of Latin America: the apparition of “La Virgin de Guadalupe,” patron saint of Mexico. More miracles await viewers in “Feliz Navidad Mamá.” (Merry Christmas, Mama). Unlike most novelas, this fascinating and heartwarming story takes place in real time, premiering on December 2nd and building to a surprising twist on El Día de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day). It’s a tale of a young mother struggling to give her son the best in life, a story full of hope and triumphant love, a novela certain to become a holiday classic.
MOVIES – “Cine del Sábado” (Saturdays at 9:00PM ET/PT) and “Cinemundo Premier” (Sundays at 9:00PM (ET/PT) return in the 2002-2003 season, presenting a scintillating primetime weekend lineup of Hollywood box office blockbusters. Among the hits scheduled are “Men in Black,” “A Perfect Storm,” “Twister,” “Deep Blue Sea,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and “Godzilla.” Telemundo’s association with the Wonderful World of Disney, the premier name in family entertainment, continues with the broadcast of 15 family-friendly adventures once a month on “El Maravilloso Mundo de Disney.” Selections include “Dinosaur,” “The Parent Trap,” “Tarzan,” “Atlantis” and “The Emperor’s New Groove.”
NEWS – “Al Rojo Vivo” (5:00 PM ET/PT), premiered Monday April 29th and immediately established itself as a major ratings power. In its first week, the show attracted 40% more total viewers than during the same period one year ago, delivered a 3.2 rating among adults 18-49 and set a Network audience record for that demographic during the time period. The new show was No. 1 in its time period in Los Angeles, the nation’s largest Hispanic market, and in Miami, Maria Celeste Arrarás’ hometown.
SPORTS – This year Telemundo has scheduled “Ritmo Deportivo,” a youth-oriented, fast-paced and high-energy magazine show hosted by Letti Coo, as well as a weekly series covering a sport that is second in popularity and attendance only to soccer in Latin American culture, Lucha Libre. Lucha Libre wrestling originated in Mexico and has become a true cultural phenomenon, combining classic elements from the worlds of sports and entertainment. Telemundo also has the exclusive Spanish Language rights to the U.S. National Soccer Team. For a second season, Telemundo Sports will carry live weekly broadcasts of Mexican League Soccer, and Telemundo presents “Road to the World Cup Games.”
