CNN en Español Celebrates Five Years Annivarsary.
February 18, 2002
CNN en Español will celebrate five years of providing regional and international news, around the clock, to Spanish-speakers in Latin America and the United States.
The first 24-hour network produced exclusively by CNN in a language other than English, CNN en Español launched on March 17, 1997. The network’s initial cable and direct-to-home (DTH) subscriber base of almost 4 million represented the largest cable network launch in Latin American history to that day. Since then CNN en Español has more than tripled its subscriber base to more than 12 million homes and hotel rooms in Latin America and more than 2 million homes in the U.S.
“This anniversary marks one of many milestones in the history of CNN en Español,” said Christopher Crommett, executive vice president and general manager of CNN en Español. “After five years, CNN en Español has established itself as an indispensable source of international and regional news for Spanish-speaking viewers in all of Latin America. Especially when major news breaks, and in times of political and economic turmoil, viewers throughout the hemisphere have come to rely on CNN en Español for independent, balanced and uncensored journalism.”
“As we look forward, the future is extremely promising for CNN en Español. The caliber of our staff and the technological tools available to us will only improve. This means we will be able to do an even more effective job of covering the news, no matter where it happens, and of presenting the news in a way that is compelling and relevant to the Latin American and U.S. Hispanic audience. We also foresee greater direct interaction with our viewers through different platforms, allowing us to be more receptive to their needs and interests.” added Crommett.
