Univision 41 Delivering Key Demos In NYC.

Spanish-language UHF-TV station Univision 41 (WXTV) has scored a major upset by winning key demographic races in the recently concluded November 2001 sweep. The sweep ratings, recently released by Nielsen, show that Univision 41 won two of the three key demographic categories in Gotham’s early news race for the first time ever and also won several important daytime races. Univision 41 programming beat such established syndicated English-language programs as “Rosie O’Donnel,” “Oprah” and “Judge Judy” to do so. Results of the sweep, the four weeks (Nov. 1 – 28, 2001) in which local TV station audiences nationwide are measured, are used to set advertising rates.
In a first for Spanish-language TV in New York, Univision 41 won two of three key demos in the 6 pm news race. Univision 41’s “Noticias 41” with anchors Rafael Pineda and Denisse Oller won the 6 pm weekday news race with 145,000 viewers aged 18-34 and 323,000 viewers 18-49. “Noticias 41” finished a close third among viewers aged 25-54 with 312,000. WNBC/4 won the older demo with 358,000 vs. 315,000 for second place “Eyewitness News” on WABC/7. WABC/7 had the second hingest rated news among the youngest with 74,000 18-34, and WNBC/4 ran third with 65,000. WNBC/4 was second among 18-49s with 267,000, ahead of WABC/7’s 265,000 by a whisker.
In the 6:30 pm network news race, Univision’s “Noticiero Univision” with Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas repeated the feat scored by their local bretheren. They won the 18-34 demo with 171,000 viewers and won the 18-49 demo with 337,000 viewers. ABC’s Peter Jennings took the 25-54 demo with 387,000 followed by NBC’s Tom Brokaw with 380,000, and “Noticiero Univision” ran a close third with 321,000.
Univision’s entertainment gossip show, “El Gordo y La Flaca,” seen 4 pm to 5 pm, beat “Oprah” to finish first in both the 18-34 crowd and the 18-49 crowd with 118,000 viewers and 208,000 viewers respectively. “Oprah” on WABC/7 squeezed by to win the 25-54 crowd with 221,000 viewers to 201,000 for “Judge Judy” on WNBC/4 and 197,000 for “El Gordo y La Flaca.”
Univision’s news magazine, “Primer Impacto,” easily won Gotham’s 5 pm news race among 18-34 and 18- 49 demos with 170,000 and 267,000 viewers respectively. WNBC/4 won the 25-54 crowd with 291,000. WABC/7 was second with 290,000. Among 18-49s WABC/7 was second with 224,000 and WNBC/4 was third with 222,000. The position of WCBS/2 is particularly dismal with only 92,000 25-54 viewers (its best demo), behind even Telemundo’s (WNJU/47) 143,000.
Univision leads among 18-34s in the 10 am hour with 94,000 for “Marta Susana.” WPIX/11 is second with 66,000 for “Maury Povich” followed by 48,000 for WABC/7’s “Rosie O’Donnell”. Among 18-49s its WPIX/11 in the lead with 153,000 followed closely by Univision’s WXTV/41 at 151,000 and “Rosie” at 143,000. WABC/7’s “Rosie” segues into the lead among 25-54s with 180,000 followed by 138,000 for “Maury” and 136,000 for “Marta Susana.”
Univision’s WXTV/41 wins among 18-34s in the 11 am hour with 92,000 for “Mujeres: Casos de la Vida Real” while WPIX/11 is second with 52,000 for “Jerry Springer,” and WABC/7 is third with 46,000 for “The View.” WPIX/11 leads among 18-49 and 25-54 with 153,000 and 161,000 respectively for “Springer” while WXTV/41 is second 18-49 at 129,000, and WABC/7 shows with 121,000 for “The View.” Among 25-54s its “The View” to place with 151,000 and WXTV/41 to show with 99,000.
