Univision.com Forms Alliance With AOL.com.
November 17, 2001
America Online, Inc. and Univision Communications Inc. announced an extensive strategic content and marketing alliance that will expand both companies’ efforts to increase US Hispanic Internet penetration and better reach current Hispanic Internet users – the country’s fastest-growing online community. America Online will expand its Spanish-language offering by featuring Univision.com content across several America Online, Inc. interactive properties; users of Univision.com, Univision’s publicly available Web site, will have access to AOL’s popular email and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) applications; and America Online will receive significant brand exposure across Univision’s television networks.
Under the alliance, content from the Univision.com Web site – the number one Spanish-language Web site among US Hispanics – will be prominently promoted across several America Online properties, including AOL, CompuServe and Netscape. Tens of millions of users of America Online’s brands will enjoy easy and convenient access to Univision’s wide array of news, information and entertainment content tailored to US Hispanics, as part of America Online’s efforts to better serve Hispanic users and Univision’s efforts to increase distribution of its content. Currently, the AOL service in the US serves the interests of its Latino members through a wide range of programming available through AOL Keyword: Latino, which is managed by AOL Latin America (Nasdaq: AOLA); America Online will also work closely with Univision to integrate their content into Keyword: Latino.
In addition, the Univision.com Web site will feature the AOL email and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) applications. America Online’s licensing of these applications to Univision will enable Univision.com users to email and engage in live “real time” communications using the most reliable and popular tools available on the Internet.
America Online will launch a comprehensive Spanish-language television advertising campaign, which will receive significant exposure across Univision’s networks. The campaign will be featured on the Univision Network, Galavision and Telefutura scheduled to launch next month. Univision will also include AOL Keywords in select on-air advertising for Univision.com.
Barry Schuler, Chairman and CEO, America Online, Inc., said: “Univision is the leading Spanish-language media company in the United States, and we are pleased to enter into this alliance, which is driven by the immense popularity of US Hispanic-oriented news and entertainment, and the importance of reaching Hispanics in the US through a brand they know, trust and love: Univision. We look forward to launching a new advertising campaign across Univision’s television programming, and to promoting Univision’s wide range of news and information across the America Online, Inc. brands.”
Javier Saralegui, Executive Vice President, Univision Communications Inc. and President of Univision Online, Inc., said: “We’re very pleased to enter into this new alliance with America Online, which we see as the marriage of the best in US Hispanic content and the world’s leading interactive services company. This alliance is a win-win-win proposition: America Online receives content and promotion across Univision’s wide array of television networks – the most effective medium to reach US Hispanics; Univision enjoys broader distribution of its content and the ability to offer Univision.com users AOL’s popular applications; while users get the best each company has to offer.”
