Terra.com Rocks Latin Youth.
October 5, 2001
Terra Lycos has transformed Los Angeles into a hub for up-and-coming Latin rock acts. Terra Lycos recently launched the first-ever, amateur month-long Latin rock competition in Los Angeles, with proceeds to fund tuition and educational needs of Latin youths affected by the Sept. 11 attacks in New York.
To date, four shows have brought in some 2,500 Latin rock fans. Altogether, twelve bands will have their chance to win over the crowd in the Terra Rock “Battle of the Bands” contest. Concert-goers will determine the winners by voting on-line for their favorite group. Voting started after the first concert Tuesday, Oct. 16 and will continue through Friday, Nov. 16. Terra.com will donate $1.00 to the Hispanic Federation for each eligible vote on the Terra Rock site.
Terra.com will contribute 100% of the Terra Rock concert proceeds to the Hispanic Federation, a New York-based, non-profit organization, with 70 member agencies, providing a variety of social services to Hispanics.
According to Dennis Seda, director of marketing at Terra.com, “Latin rock in any of its many forms is a preferred genre among music lovers today. Never before has Latin rock been so popular and so close to becoming a classic genre in the music world. Now, Terra.com not only presents these existing groups but also creates a perfect venue for Latin youths to contribute to the relief efforts for their peers in New York.”
Additionally, Terra.com is auctioning off musicians’ guitars, jackets, drumsticks and other memorabilia, with full proceeds going towards the Hispanic Federation’s Sept. 11 education fund.
Bands participating in the competition include East LA Sabor Factory, Slowrider, Enjambre, Rascuache, Chencha Berrinches, Almalafa, Curanderos, Viernes 13, 15 Letras, and Calavera. Acclaimed groups Los Aterciopelados, Los Pericos, Amigos Invisibles, Pastilla, Circo, Cielo Ceniza, David Summers and Hombres G, will be guest bands performing during the Terra Rock concerts.
The winning band will receive $5,000. However, they aren’t the only winners in this musical competition. Music enthusiasts who listen to streaming music from the Terra Rock competition through Nov. 16 will be eligible to win prizes, including Hewlett Packard PDA’s (portable digital assistants). Fans who attend the concerts in Los Angeles can win PDA’s, the latest model digital entertainment centers, and an all expenses paid trip for two and tickets to a concert performance by one of the competing bands in the “Battle of the Bands” amateur Latin rock contest.
