PLI Launches Online Privacy Ad Campaign To Educate Consumers.
September 16, 2001
The Privacy Leadership Initiative (PLI) and the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) have launched a major new online advertising campaign aimed at educating consumers on how they can gain greater confidence in managing their privacy. 26 IAB member companies plus Eastman Kodak have contributed online ad space valued at more than $13 million that is expected to generate more than 538 million impressions over the next year, reaching more than 70% of the Internet audience. This is the largest consumer education campaign about privacy launched by the business community.
ANA is a founding member of PLI and serves on the PLI Executive Committee. If your company is not already a member of PLI, we urge you to support this consumer education campaign. One method of support is by displaying one of the banner ads on your corporate website. Information on the campaign and other privacy information and research studies is available at the PLI website, www.understandingprivacy.org
The ad campaign presents a series of “tips” that will teach consumers how to protect their personal information from theft and abuse. The ads remind people to choose and protect unique passwords, ensure a secure online connection before providing credit card information, safeguard their Social Security number, protect personal mail and prevent unauthorized use of their computer. The privacy education campaign will use three different formats: banner ads, interactive marketing units (IMUs) and a rich media technology format developed by Netomat, an interactive software development company.
The PLI is a partnership of CEO’s from major corporations and leading trade associations who believe that consumers should be able to choose what and how personal information is used in the pursuit of better meeting their privacy needs. Through research and education, PLI is working to equip businesses to put appropriate privacy policies in place, inform consumers about steps they can take to protect their privacy in both the online and offline world, and provide thoughtful research on the benefits that consumers can receive from the responsible use of information in the marketplace.
