The Evolving Telecom E-Marketplace & Its Adapting Business Model.

A new Yankee Group Report, “The Evolving Telecom E-Marketplace: Adapting Its Business Model to Survive,” looks at the current business climate challenges facing the independent e-marketplace in all industries–the telecom industry included. The Report describes the different business models pursued by seven e-marketplace companies, and elaborates on the challenges and opportunities presented by each business model as well as future e-commerce trends for the e-marketplace companies.

The Report looks at how consumers have used the telecom e-marketplace as a free source of reference information on communication products, but have not been compelled to place orders through the e-marketplace Web site. The lack of order transactions has seriously limited the e-marketplace operator’s revenues and created the expected market shakeout. The days of evaluating the success of the e-marketplace operator’s Web site by its ability to attract consumer interest and “hits” to the site are over.

According to Sharon Ballard, an analyst for the Yankee Group’s Telecom E-Business research and consulting practice, “Necessity as the mother of invention has prompted these e-marketplace companies to expand their offerings into other business opportunities. Almost all of the e-marketplace companies profiled in this Report are pursuing some form of a software license business strategy.”
