KVEA-TV Delivering News & Information.
April 29, 2001
KVEA-TV Channel 52 in Los Angeles continues to prove itself to be a community oriented station by providing unique investigative reporting to their viewers. KVEA-TV produced a series of important news stories for the month of May as part of an investigative unit named, “Asignacion Especial.”
The featured topics included: Guns and Kids, Immigrant Persecution, Tijuana/Sexual Tourism, El Salvador after the Quakes, Meth Labs, and Consumer Reports, among others.
KVEA-TV is designed to inform and empower by reporting news that affects the lives of Hispanic Los Angeles. These recent journalistic pieces add to the reputation KVEA has built in the last year, evident in receiving six Golden Mike Awards in 2000 alone, including “Best 30-minute Newscast” at 6pm. KVEA now broadcasts news 7 days a week: M-F 6-7am, 11:30-12pm, and M-Su 6p & 11pm.
During the recent May Sweeps, KVEA increased both its rating and share for its early local newscast M-F 6pm Noticiero 52 over May’00. Ratings for early local news are up 40% over last year to a 6.7 household rating in NHSI. In NSI, KVEA showed a 20% gain in household rating year to year to a 1.8 household rating, one of only two stations to show growth in the 6pm newscast, and the only Spanish station to do so.
KVEA also showed growth during May in its M-F 11pm Noticiero 52 newscast. KVEA received a 6.7 household rating with a 30% share of Spanish in NHSI, up 12% month to month, and up 56% from Feb’01’s 4.3 rating and 24 share.
By being at the forefront of breaking news, and covering important forums such as the Mayoral Debate Tuesday May 29, KVEA-TV has become a powerhouse in news coverage.
Adding to the stations commitment to being the best in news, is the recent appointment of Al Corral as News Director of “Noticiero Telemundo 52.” Corral is a veteran production news executive, who will be responsible for the in-house news production, local news specials, and management of all six locally produced newscasts, including the supervision of the newly created “Special Assignment” Investigative Unit. Most recently, Corral was the News Director at KCET-TV, Channel 28 from 1998 to 2001.
