KVEA-TV, the Los Angeles O&O of Telemundo Network, will broadcast live the local Mayoral Debate “Voces del Pueblo 2001,” between Speaker Emeritus Antonio Villaraigosa, and City Attorney James K. Hahn. The Los Angeles Mayoral Race 2001 could elect the first Latino Mayor for the city that boasts a 38% Latino population.

KVEA-TV, La Opinion and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) have joined forces to create the city’s only Spanish-language live televised debate. This forum is scheduled for Tuesday, May 29th, 2001 from p.m. to 7 p.m. at Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School in Los Angeles.

This exclusive telecast will also include a unique webcast of the debate, which will stream video across the country, and offer the user their choice of viewing the debate in Spanish or English. Users can log on to http://www.kvea.com to electronically view the debate. In addition, links to http://www.laopinion.com and http://www.naleo.org will be included for additional information.

“Voces del Pueblo 2001,” will address six issues of concern that are paramount for Latino voters and residents in Los Angeles, including education, government access, housing, public safety/services, secession and transportation.

Monica Lozano, President and Chief Operating Officer of La Opinion will moderate the debate with questioning by journalists from KVEA-TV and La Opinion.

“Voces del Pueblo 2001,” will be the only forum debate prior to the June 5th election day that will be transmitted in Spanish, but can also be listened to in English by Second Audio Programming (SAP), if your television comes equipped with this feature. This is a pioneering step in building bridges between audiences that speak different languages. KVEA Channel 52 hopes to provide more forums like this in the future.
