UniMás, a Univision network, announced the acquisition of the exclusive rights for the dramatic series “El Varón de la Droga” (The Drug Baron) at NATPE.
Inspired by the true-life exploits of Joaquín ‘El Chapo Guzmán,’ who Forbes Magazine dubbed the “world’s most powerful drug dealer,” “El Varón de la Droga” will bring audiences an extraordinarily authentic view of the inner workings and politics of the drug trafficking underworld thanks to a script penned by former cartel member turned author Andrés López. His best-selling book “El Cartel de los Sapos” (The Cartel of Snitches), written while serving time for past transgressions, was turned into a hit movie and a blockbuster TV series, and was lauded for its stark realism and unique “insider’s perspective.” In addition, his previous dramatic series “Las Muñecas de la Mafia” (Mafia Dolls) was a tremendous hit when broadcast in the U.S. This new series promises to further explore the complicated and extremely dangerous life of a major drug lord beyond just the “business” to the toll it takes on his personal life, and those around him, as well.
“Today’s announcement speaks to our commitment to delivering the best alternative programming in the U.S.,” said Alberto Ciurana, president of Programming and Content for Univision Networks. “And by having Andrés on board as screenwriter, we will be able to offer our audience an unprecedented experience in terms of authenticity and realism.”
“I’m extremely excited to see ‘El Varón de la Droga’ being brought to the screen on UniMás,” said screenwriter Andrés López. “Their programming strategy of offering cutting-edge, alternative drama fits perfectly with the ‘ripped-from-the-headlines’ timeliness of my latest work.”
