NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises launches “El Campeón en Ti”

NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises announced the launch of “El Campeón en Ti” (The Champion Within You), a new company-wide campaign under the banner of its award-winning corporate social responsibility initiative, “El Poder En Ti” (The Power Within You), focused on empowering young Hispanics to achieve their full potential and find their inner champion through sports.

As the exclusive Spanish-language home of 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™, Telemundo’s “El Campeón en Ti” will focus its first efforts on soccer, investing more than a quarter of a million dollars and partnering with the U.S. Soccer Foundation, Alianza U Foundation and local community organizations to expand access to organized soccer for underserved Latino youth.  In partnership with the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s “Soccer for Success” program, Telemundo’s “El Campeón en Ti” will help provide more than 20,000 children the opportunity to play soccer and reap its many benefits in cities across the country. Cities Telemundo and the U.S. Soccer Foundation will partner in include: Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Miami, San Antonio, Houston, Phoenix, Washington, D.C., Orlando and Dallas.  As part of the campaign, Telemundo will partner with the Alianza U Foundation for “El Campeón en Ti Scholarships” to advance Latino educational attainment, recognize young athletes and celebrate academic excellence, leadership skills and the pursuit of educational goals.

“As the new home of the FIFA World Cup™, Telemundo goes beyond bringing fútbol to viewer’s screens by also bringing its power to the Hispanic community,” said Ginette Magaña, Director, Corporate Affairs, NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises. “In a first-ever initiative for the network, we are proud to partner with two leading soccer foundations, the U.S. Soccer Foundation and Alianza U Foundation, to provide children the opportunity to play soccer, empower future youth champions and offer resources for healthier living in our communities.”

“El Campeón en Ti” promotes the positive benefits of participating in sports and help to bridge gaps in education and health for the Hispanic community’s youth. For the nearly half of all Latino youth who are overweight [1], participation in sports can play an important role in reducing body fat percentage and improving blood pressure [2]. In addition, youth who participate in sports have been shown to have higher graduation rates [3].

“The U.S. Soccer Foundation is excited to partner with Telemundo’s “El Campeón en Ti” campaign to bring high-quality, evidence-based soccer programs to more Latino youth,” said Ed-Foster Simeon, President & CEO of the U.S. Soccer Foundation. “Through this partnership, even more Latino youth will not only have the opportunity to play in an organized soccer program, but can reap the game’s many benefits. Soccer for Success enables youth living in underserved communities to engage with a trained coach-mentor, cultivate critical life skills, and lead healthier, more active lives.”

The campaign will feature a series of segments across network shows including “Un Nuevo Día,” “Suelta La Sopa” and “Noticias Telemundo,” among others. Telemundo’s sports talent, including four-time Emmy Award winner and chief commentator for Telemundo’s coverage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™, Andres Cantor, will take part in the campaign.  In addition to on-air promos, local “El Campeón en Ti” champions making significant impacts in their community through sports will be celebrated across the country.

“El Campeón En Ti” will also feature signature on-the-ground activations led by Telemundo stations in local events nationwide. Events will include “Kids Fest” and “Parte de Tu Familia” (Part of Your Family) event in Dallas, and “Carnaval Primavera” (Spring Carnival) and “Cinco de Mayo Festival” in Los Angeles, among other station activations across the country.
