Hispanic Federation: Help for the Families of the Victims of 587.
November 6, 2001
The New York-based Hispanic Federation and its member organizations are providing assistance to the families of victims of Flight 587, most of whom were of Dominican descent.
Now in its eleventh year, the Hispanic Federation is a membership organization of 72 Latino health and social service organizations in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Its mission is to strengthen Hispanic health and human service agencies, enabling them to better meet the needs of the growing Hispanic community and to obtain a greater portion of available resources. The Federation also helps its member agencies to provide the best possible services to the Latino community.
Cash Assistance to Victims’ Families
The Hispanic Federation has established a Fund to provide bridge funding for families who lost loved ones as a result of the Flight 587 accident. This Fund provides cash assistance to victims’ families with the goal of helping them meet their immediate needs until they receive assistance from American Airlines and other emergency assistance programs. The Hispanic Federation is working with seven member agencies to disburse the cash assistance to victims’ family members, including spouses; parents; children and their guardian; siblings; and grandchildren.
Grants to Local Latino Agencies Providing Emergency Assistance
The Federation is also providing financial support to community agencies offering emergency services to families. These include:
· Case management
· Translation services
· Psychological and grief counseling
· Assistance filling out application forms for benefits
· Help accessing benefits to be provided by American Airlines and other emergency assistance programs.
· Referrals to specialized services
· Help with funeral arrangements
· Legal assistance
· Telephone use
Benefit Concert
Proceeds of the Hispanos Unidos Concert to be held at Madison Square Garden on December 9 will be donated to the Hispanic Federation’s efforts to provide emergency assistance to victims of Flight 587 and the World Trade Center attacks. The concert is sponsored by Spanish Broadcasting Systems, which owns two leading Hispanic radio stations, La Mega 97.3 FM and Nueva Amor FM 93.1.
