Radio Unica 1210 AM In Miami Promotes Education.

Radio Unica 1210 AM (WNMA) is reaching out to South Florida’s youth with its recently launched Student of the Week program, which recognizes students from elementary schools in Miami-Dade County’s Public School System for their outstanding academic achievements. The program runs through June 2001.

Tomas Martinez, vice president and general manager of Radio Unica 1210 AM Miami commented, “As broadcasters we believe that extraordinary accomplishments, especially by children, should not go unrecognized. We strongly encourage this so that, in the future, children may grow-up to be positive and productive members of our society.”

Since its debut in February 2001, Radio Unica has and continues to select 10 children each week from different school districts and broadcasts their names and achievements as the Student of the Week. All names selected are automatically entered into the station’s national contest with the eligibility to win: 1st prize – $ 3,000 scholarship fund, 2nd prize – a trip to Disney World in Orlando, Florida and 3rd prize – a new computer. Grand prizewinners will be announced in June.

As part of Radio Unica’s commitment in promoting education, Radio Unica’s Dr. Isabel Gomes-Bassols will visit the Dante B. Fascell Elementary School located at 15625 S.W. 80 Street on Monday, April 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

During Career Week, Dr. Isabel will visit fourth and fifth graders to discuss her career as a child and adolescent psychologist, and radio host of the network’s three-hour program, Dra. Isabel. The visit will provide an opportunity for students to learn about career options in psychology, counseling and the radio industry. During her visit she will also address the importance of staying in school.

“We’re very excited to have Dr. Isabel visit our school”, said Patricia Ortega, counselor at Dante B. Fascell Elementary School. Sara Fernandez, a counselor at the same school said, “I’ve heard wonderful things about Dr. Isabel and her work in helping women through her national radio program. I think she’ll be a great resource for our students, especially our girls, in talking about everything she’s accomplished throughout her career.”
