2004 UEFA Cup Final & Super Cup @ Fox Sports en Español.

Through an agreement reached between Fox Sports International and UEFA, Fox Sports World will retain the exclusive U.S. telecast rights to this year’s UEFA Cup final and Super Cup matches. Also included in the agreement are extended telecast rights for Spanish-language sports television services Fox Sports en Español in the U.S. and Fox Sports Latin America. This year’s telecasts will mark the fourth consecutive year the two championships have aired on Fox Sports World. With the addition of Fox Sports World’s sister channels, the combined audience for this year’s matches will reach approximately 37 million across the Americas.

This year’s UEFA Cup final will be staged in Gothenburg, Sweden on Wednesday, May 19, 2004. First introduced in the 1971-72 season, the UEFA Cup each year features over 100 premier European clubs that have qualified through their placement in domestic league and cup competitions. Teams include those finishing in leading positions behind the champions in their respective domestic divisions, plus the winners of national Cup competitions, and in certain countries, the League Cup competitions. Also qualifying are teams finishing within the top three positions of the UEFA Intertoto Cup competition, and three clubs from UEFA’s annual Fair Play assessment. Last year, Portugal’s Porto triumphed over Celtic of Scotland in the UEFA Cup final and took the coveted trophy.

The UEFA Super Cup will be played in Monaco on Friday, August 27, 2004, and will herald the start of European club competition for the 2004/2005 season. The Super Cup has featured the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup since 2000. Last year, Italy’s AC Milan took the UEFA Super Cup title and trophy with a victory over Porto.

“The UEFA Cup final and Super Cup are among the most prestigious events on the global soccer calendar,” said David Sternberg, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Fox Sports International. “Having both UEFA Cup competitions available across three Fox Sports television platforms will be tremendously exciting for our viewers throughout the Americas.”
