The star-studded evening will include an emotional moment, as viewers are witness to a special performance in memory of the late popular Mexican banda singer, Valentin Elizalde. Also known as “El Gallo de Oro,” (The Golden Rooster) Elizalde recorded his first album in 1998. Since then, he went on to record one production per year. Some of his biggest Norteño hit songs include “Vete Ya,” “Ebrio de Amor,” “Como Me Duele,” “Vencedor,” “Mi Virgencita,” and “Soy Asi.” Last year, he was featured on the soundtrack for the Mexican film Al Otro Lado with the song “Sobre la Tumba de Mi Padre,” and this year, his hit song titled “Lobo Domesticado” has been topping the charts for several consecutive weeks.
Mexico’s “Golden Girl” and Multi-Platinum artist Paulina Rubio, will thrill viewers with a rendition from her latest album “Ananda,” which she launched last year and has since topped the charts all over Latin America, the U.S. and Spain. Rubio’s distinct style is well loved by both the Spanish and English-language world. She performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Gala in Oslo, Norway, last December, alongside such acts as Rihanna, John Legend, and Lionel Richie, who also lined up to honor 2006 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Muhammad Yunus. Rubio is up for two awards in the categories of Latin Pop Album of the Year, Female for “Ananda,” and Latin Pop Airplay Song of the Year, Female for “Ni Una Sola Palabra.”
Puerto Rico’s most successful musical group, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, celebrates its 45th anniversary this year. The thirteen-piece orchestra, which was officially named “Ambassadors of our Music” by the Puerto Rican Senate, has released over 40 albums, and received countless awards all over the world. Their many hits include such salsa classics as “El Menu” and “Timbalero,” but the group continues to evolve, and their performance will marks the first time they perform in an awards show.
Known as the “Caballero de la Salsa” (Gentleman of Salsa), Gilberto Santa Rosa’s musical career spans over 30 years. He has broken down cultural and language barriers with his music, allowing him to take his show into countries such as Great Britain, Italy and Japan. Santa Rosa’s albums have all achieved platinum status in Puerto Rico, Latin America and the Hispanic communities of the United States. He is up for two awards in the categories of Tropical Album of the Year, Male for “Directo al Corazón” and Tropical Airplay Song of the Year, Duo or Group “Los Hombres Tienen la Culpa.”
Puerto Rican reggaeton duo Wisin & Yandel (Juan Luis Morera and Llandel Veguilla), also known as “The Historic Duo,” made their mark in this hot music genre with their first solo album, “Reyes del Nuevo Milenio” released in 2000. This led to three other productions, all of which reached gold status. Last year, they launched their own record label, W&Y Records, which released a compilation album titled “Los Vaqueros,” featuring several guest artists. Wisin & Yandel have set themselves apart with their music, and this year they are up for four awards in the categories of Hot Latin Song of the Year, Vocal Duet for “Noche de Sexo”, Hot Latin Songs Artist of the Year, Reggaeton Song of the Year for “Pam Pam” and Latin Ringtone of the Year for “Rakata.”
Puerto Rican salsa star, Victor Manuelle, released his 10th studio album last year, titled “Decision Unanime,” which quickly climbed up the charts making him a finalist up for two awards including Tropical Album of the Year, Male for “Decisión Unánime” and Tropical Airplay Song of the Year, Male for “Nuestro Amor se ha Vuelto Ayer.” Manuelle is also an accomplished and prolific songwriter who mostly records material he has written or co-written himself. One of his latest compositions, “Si Te Fueras De Mi” was recorded by Jennifer Lopez and is featured on her Spanish-language album, “Como Ama Una Mujer” released last month.
