The Absence Of ‘El Cucuy de la Tarde’ Could Hurt Univision Radio.
February 9, 2004
According to Radio & Records magazine on Monday March 8, 2004, ” Merrill Lynch analyst Jessica Reif Cohen issued a report Friday that addresses the indefinite suspension of KSCA (La Nueva 101.9)/Los Angeles afternoon host Renan Almendarez Coello, known as “El Cucuy de la Tarde.” Cohen believes that until a dispute between Coello and Univision Radio concerning the wages of his show’s “Tropa Loca” is resolved, Univision will continue to air best-of programs, which would result in advertiser cancellations. She also says that KSCA and Coello’s show “are not as important as they once were,” as the company has grown dramatically via acquisitions. In addition, Coello’s contract “is at the top end of the industry scale, lowering the cash flow contribution of the show.” Should “El Cucuy” remain off the air and under contract to Univision, Cohen expects to reduce her sales and cash flow estimates by about $8 million and $4 million, respectively, for 2004. And, should Coello move to a competing station, the estimate reductions would be greater — possibly up to $15 million annualized in revenue, reflecting share losses across several Univision Radio stations around the U.S. According to Cohen’s estimates, Coello’s show tallies at least $12 million in net revenue, including syndication, per year”.
