Acting Like A Minority Majority.

50 million Hispanics or Latinos – we’re huge!

With numerous great accomplishments in sports, science, politics, business, etc.

It should make us all very proud to be part of this vibrant, growing and exciting group.

Just last week: the Pew Hispanic Center showed that Hispanics accounted for just over half of the overall population growth in the U.S. since 2000; Jane Velez-Mitchell replaced Glenn Beck at CNN with her new show “Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell”, which airs nightly at 7 pm; the great comedian Carlos Mencia continues to issue new material (“Carlos Mencia: Performance Enhanced” came out on DVD this week. Mencia’s show “Mind of Mencia” is also now airing on MTV Tr3s, Monday through Thursday at 10 pm EST); the Mexican Cultural Institute of New York and Cinema Tropical will present “The Future South of the Border”, a series of Mexican sci-fi classics, October 30th through November 2nd at 92YTribeca; and according to reports, Calle 13 and Eminem will be recording together in the near future.

And of course – everyone is talking about the Latino Vote for this week’s election.

All great stuff!

But something is missing though.

We still don’t stand up for each other the way other ethnic groups do and we still put each other down as often as we can.

I’ve seen Latinos in sports put other Latinos down. Latinos in business put down partners or competitors for no reason.

What prompted me to write this? Just a few weeks ago in our own industry I saw professionals putting other Hispanic ad professionals down. A major agency hired a senior person, and in the press release announcing his hiring the new employee talked negatively about his prior employers. I was surprised this agency sent that press note out, but more importantly, says a lot about this person.
I’m not pointing fingers – who knows, I may be infected by this Latino disease too.

What I will do is make a concerted effort to NOT do that. I will do my part in not putting down my fellow Latinos “just because” – because of jealousy, anger, as retribution, or other nonsense reason.
The more of you that join me the stronger and better we will be.

Gracias.
