AHAA statement regarding NY & NJ AG settlement with Arbitron on PPM accuracy.

The Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies (AHAA) shared with its members the encouraging news of Arbitron’s agreement to settle with the states of New York and New Jersey to resolve the sampling methodology issues surrounding the Portable People Meter (PPM) radio audience measurement tool. Members of AHAA’s PPM task force worked diligently with Arbitron representatives to communicate and address the concerns of the Hispanic-specialized marketing industry and we look forward to working with them further on the modifications they will be implementing. Wednesday’s announcement by the Attorneys General Cuomo (NY) and Milgram (NJ) was a significant breakthrough to ensure accurate representation of Hispanic radio listeners and preserve a critical marketing medium for this powerful population.

10 reasons why Univison will not go into bankruptcy.

First and foremost, a very happy New Year to all of you. Yes 2009 is here; let’s hope it does not pick up where 2008 left off. I want to start the New Year with an issue that has been talked about a la souto voce for most of the second half of 2008. It has to do with the largest media company serving the US Hispanic market, which of course is Univision.

Many have speculated that it will soon file for bankruptcy, so strong was the speculation recently that Univision issued a statement that it had a very strong balance sheet which would carry it through this economic crisis. Of course the obvious detractors are still out there, mainly Televisa, who would love for that moment to come and possibly put the Programming License Agreement (PLA) in play through bankruptcy court. To them and all others, do not hold your breath, you may find yourself in the emergency room.

7 Predictions for 2009

As we step tentatively into the new year, prospects look pretty grim. With unemployment predicted to top 9%, industry bailouts looming, a massive retrenchment in the stock market and a generally accepted view that things aren’t likely to get better any time soon, it will be all too easy to slide into a state of cynicism, or even despair.

Uncertainty and pessimism color attitudes toward predictions, too, particularly those that dare to suggest resumed growth ahead. Some will have a tendency to regard such forecasts as wishful thinking, or, worse, woefully out of touch.

Shall we throw all predictions out the window?

A cautionary Tale of Rebranding gone astray.

Most of the branding articles that you read are happy, glowing tales of how an agency rebranded a client and turned them into a superstar brand with double-digit growth. Well, this is not one of them.
