Cuba
By Gonzalo López Martí – LMMIAMI.COM
- Some 10 years ago I was employed by a major multinational advertising conglomerate.
- Under the wing of said conglomerate, I was part of a small team of opportunists –I mean, professionals- with the task of opening an ad agency in Miami to cater to the US Hispanic & Latin American markets.
- New York City had been initially considered but ultimately Miami was selected as the best location.
- It just so happens that one of the head honchos of said conglomerate at the time confided in my then boss that he and other head honchos sensed new winds blowing in Cuba.

Millennials Adept at Filtering Out Ads
Millennials have been born and raised in the age of technology, and unlike past generations, they are not influenced by traditional “push” marketing strategies. Nora Ganim Barnes, chancellor professor of marketing and director of the Center for Marketing Research at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, spoke with eMarketer’s Lisa Barron about the implications for companies.
The Nuance of Women’s Empowerment [INSIGHT]
Women are everywhere. No surprise right? They do, after all, make up 50% of the world’s population. Yet everywhere we look, women are a topic of conversation. Michelle Obama’s outfit choices on a recent tour of Japan are proclaimed to break down female stereotypes. Sweaty, jiggling and fabulous women exercising on our screens chant ‘This girl can’ . A woman’s mob killing in Afghanistan sparks a global #JusticeForFarkhunda movement. The banning of India’s daughter, a documentary about the gang rape in Delhi, raises hackles across the globe while Ellen Pao sheds light on sexism in Silicon Valley.

Have TV Everywhere Users Returned to the Couch?
Multichannel pay TV subscriptions have plenty of benefits over relying solely on an over-the-top (OTT) device, and according to Adobe Digital Index research released in March 2015, TV Everywhere adoption continued to rise last year. TV Everywhere penetration among pay TV subscribers in the US in Q4 2014 was nearly double that in the same quarter the year prior, at 12.5%, vs. 6.5% in Q4 2013. Adobe estimated this would reach 18% by the end of 2015.
Are Timesheets Killing Innovation?
It’s interesting how creative professionals have never really found a way to be suitably paid. As a writer, I was asked my rate per word, which I found a particularly distasteful way to measure my value. It felt as if I were selling old books to trendy restaurants by the yard, honoring volume over ideas.

Are Hispanics the Last Line of Defense for Struggling Brands
HispanicThe prevailing wisdom is that investment in the Hispanic market is a growth move by marketers looking to increase their revenue and market share. However I have quietly noticed a trend during the last few years that leads me to question the motives behind these investments. Has increased Hispanic market investment been a defensive move? Missed Opportunities: Assessing Latino Turnout in 2014
Across the board voter turnout was down in 2014. In 2010 about 91 million votes were cast and turnout among the voting eligible population was 41.8 percent. Four years later only 81 million peopled voted for a turnout rate of 35.9 percent according to data collected by Professor Michael McDonald. Looking at Democratic losses in states such as Colorado, Florida and Illinois, some observers questioned whether Latino turnout in particular was even lower. While not all 50 states have data available on official validated vote in 2014 yet, most states have now reported vote history and we can assess what happened in the 2014 midterms. By Matt Barreto

Generation Y or “Millennials” (aged 18-34) are, on one hand, just like their grandparents when it comes to their finances – they’re conservative, risk-averse, and realistic about setting goals and taking responsibility. At the same time, they exhibit all the telltale signs of youth – they’re more confident than other generations that they’ll reach their financial goals; they’re more optimistic that their financial situation is improving; and they bring a joie de vivre to their careers.
