Al Dia soccer tournament.

Al Día, a North Texas’ Spanish-language newspaper, announced the creation of COPA AL DIA, a soccer tournament for local youth players ages 12-16. The tournament will take place Aug. 9-17.

The tournament will be managed by PROSPORT, a Mexican marketing and event-planning company led by former Mexican soccer legend Enrique Borja.

“We are proud to put together COPA AL DIA, which will serve as an additional link between Al Día, with its strong tradition of providing sports news, and the fast-growing Hispanic community,” Al Día publisher Alejandro Sanchez Sobrino said. “This tournament will enable young players to participate in a highly visible event which could lead to being discovered by school coaches and potential clubs.”
COPA AL DIA will take place on two consecutive weekends at Bob Weisman Sports Complex in Lewisville, Texas. The qualifying round will be played Aug. 9-10, and the championship round on Aug. 16-17.

“It’s a great honor to participate along with Al Día on this tournament,” said Borja, president of PROSPORT. “With this tournament Al Día shows the commitment with the Hispanic community in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Besides providing excellent coverage of local sports, now Al Día organizes an event that gives kids the opportunity to practice a sport”.

Borja, who is also president of Mexico’s pro soccer team Tigres de Monterrey, added: “This tournament will offer opportunities for young soccer players to demonstrate their talent and aspire to follow a career as an athlete, or to have a chance at a soccer scholarship.”
