ALMA 2002 Awards Winners.

The National Council of La Raza (NCLR) held the 2002 ALMA Awards on Saturday, May 18, at the historic Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Actor/comedian Paul Rodriguez (Tortilla Soup, Ali) hosted the event which will air on ABC on June 1 from 8-10 p.m. (ET/PT). The ALMA Awards (American Latino Media Arts Awards), executive produced by Ken Ehrlich, is the only Latino-themed primetime award show honoring outstanding artistic achievement and the enhancement of the Latino image in entertainment, including film, television and music.

The special honorees of the night were John Leguizamo, who received the “Entertainer of the Year” award; Antonio Banderas who received “The Anthony Quinn Award for Achievement in Motion Pictures”; Freddy Fender received “The Ritchie Valens Pioneer Award”; and Ricky Martin received the “National Council of La Raza Vanguard Award.”

The non-televised categories were announced at the NCLR Pre-ALMAGala held at the Biltmore Hotel on Friday, May 17. Miramax received a special award for “Excellence in Diversity” and Franc Reyes received the “Emerging Filmmaker
Award.”

NCLR was founded in 1968 to improve life opportunities for Hispanic Americans and represents over 280 local affiliates, community-based organizations that provide housing, education, immigration, and social services to more than four million Latinos annually in 37 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico and a broader network of more than 30,000 groups and individuals.
