Aztlan ‘Latino Rock’ Fest Goes International.
August 16, 2003
The Aztlan Fest will visit a dozen cities in the US and, for the first time in its history, cross the border for shows on Mexican soil.
This year’s headliner is A.N.I.M.A.L., one of the best metal bands from Latin America. With a thrash-hardcore sound and biting lyrics about social injustice and in defense of the downtrodden, A.N.I.M.A.L. has created a very combative style that shows a different, powerful side of Latin rock rarely seen in the United States. Also performing is Cabrito VuDu, Mexico’s hottest ska band.
Starting early October, the fest will visit the top Latino markets in the USA, including Chicago, Detroit, Austin, Dallas, Houston and Los Angeles. South of the border the Aztlan Fest will stop in Mexicali, Tecate and Tijuana.
Started modestly in 2000 in Los Angeles, the Aztlan Fest has grown beyond expectations and spread to many cities as a result of a burgeoning interest in Latino/Chicano underground music. The festival features both world class and up-and-coming artists, bringing together in one place diverse genres such as alternative rock, metal, punk, reggae, ska and hip-hop and offering an alternative to pop and commercial acts. Past performers include Voodoo Glow Skulls and Union 13 from the U.S, and Garrobos and Salon Victoria from Mexico, among others.
