Beyond the Book -Latinos Writers Conference.

Whether they work in Spanish or English, writers across America constantly struggle to find just the right word. In today’s economy, though, “wordsmiths” need to do more than simply write well, no matter what language they use. Often, having the proper information as well as understanding new technologies is the crux of the challenge.

On Friday, April 25, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, “Beyond the Book,” a conference on the business of writing, will feature Adriana Lopez, editor-in-chief of Criticas Magazine, a “sibling” publication of Publishers Weekly, discussing new opportunities for writers in the Spanish-language and Latino book market in the US. “Beyond the Book,” is presented by Copyright Clearance Center, the world’s largest licensing agent for text reproduction rights.

In recognition of the growing importance of the Latino community in the United States (Hispanics now comprise 12% of the U.S. population and are the fastest growing ethnic group in the country), as well as the phenomenal growth of the Latino book market in both English and Spanish, the Association of American Publishers (AAP) has declared 2003 to be “The Year of Publishing for Latinos,” with Adriana Lopez serving as its official spokesperson.

The third conference in an ongoing series, “Beyond the Book” in Los Angeles will provide insights and information that authors and freelance journalists can use to seek out new avenues of revenue that go beyond the printed page, according to Christopher Kenneally, Copyright Clearance Center’s director of author relations.

Also featured on the “Beyond the Book” panel will be:

— Joe Robinson, Santa Monica-based author of Work to Live (published in January by Perigee) and former editor-in-chief of Escape Magazine;

— Susan Perry, Ph.D., a psychologist and author of the Los Angeles Times bestseller, Writing in Flow, about improving productivity and creativity in the writing process; and

— Charlie Trowbridge of John Wiley & Son’s science publications to discuss how Web-based “content acquisition” helps “speed science.”
