Big City Radio Launches Rumba 107.1 FM in New York.
April 9, 2002
Big City Radio, Inc. announced that it launched Rumba 107.1 FM in New York. The new top 40 Spanish music format replaces the station’s previous country music format.
“We are very pleased to make our entry into the Hispanic market in New York with the launch of Rumba 107.1 FM,” said Stuart Subotnick, Chairman of Big City Radio.
Charles Fernandez, President and Chief Executive Officer of Big City Radio said, “The Hispanic population is the fastest growing population in the United States and we have Spanish radio stations in the top three Hispanic markets in the country, Los Angeles, Chicago and now New York. This gives us opportunities to sell Spanish media in all three of these high revenue generating markets, as well as Miami through our affiliate station WSUA.”
Prior to Rumba 107.1 FM, there were only three FM radio stations serving 3.8 million Hispanics in the tri-state area. Through recently completed and successfully tested engineering enhancements, including a move of one of the Company’s antenna towers from Monmouth, New Jersey to Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, Rumba 107.1 FM now reaches a total population of nearly 10 million people in New York City’s five boroughs and the suburbs of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
After extensive research, the Company chose a top 40 Spanish music format station targeting the 18 – 49 bilingual New York population for Rumba 107.1 FM. The station will cater to an underserved second and third generation Hispanic market in New York.
