Bilingual, Bicultural, Biliterate ,,,,,,,,

I believe Bicultural, bilingual and biliterate individuals often develop a kind of elite adaptability, and honestly, we’re not talking enough about this.
The older I get, the more I appreciate how much growing up between cultures shaped the way I think, work, write and move through the world. My childhood was in Argentina. My formative years were in the U.S. My husband is Colombian, and many of my closest friends are from across Latin America and Europe. Different traditions, perspectives, accents, customs, and ways of seeing life weren’t occasional experiences, they were just…Tuesday.
So, what happens when that’s your normal? You learn early that context matters. You realize the same message can inspire one audience and completely flop with another. You understand identity isn’t fixed or one-dimensional, it’s layered, fluid, sometimes messy, and oftentimes beautiful. And switching gears quickly and code-switching? That becomes second nature.
I genuinely believe this mindset has been one of the biggest advantages in my marketing career. It’s helped me move across brands, categories, and industries with agility and curiosity. It’s helped me learn new spaces quickly, understand different clients and consumers, shift from strategy to execution, and spot patterns others might miss. Sometimes I think bicultural folks are doing mental gymnastics daily and calling it “normal.”
And this isn’t just my opinion. Research backs it up. Harvard Business Review has highlighted Cultural Intelligence (CQ) as a critical leadership capability in today’s business environment. The ability to navigate different contexts, communication styles, and perspectives often leads to stronger outputs. This makes so much sense to me. See article in the first comment.
What once felt like “just my life” now feels like a real professional strength. Perhaps even a competitive edge.
So, to all my bilingual and bicultural marketing friends: please know your perspective is not niche. It never was. It’s a superpower. Use your voice. Speak up. Take space. I’ve sat in meetings where I’m the only one representing multicultural voices, and trust me, that room needed more than one of us.
Your ability to translate, adapt, connect dots, read nuance, internalize and build bridges is exactly what modern brands and advertisers need in this fast-changing world. Maybe now more than ever.
