May 22, 2005
Bank of America announced the launch of its new financial fitness campaign entitled “Team Up with Bank of America: Educate to Activate,” during a press conference at the Home Depot Center. Partnering with Club Deportivo Chivas USA and best-selling author, Los Angeles native Louis Barajas, Bank of America hopes to further educate local Latinos on the importance of developing a healthy financial lifestyle.
“Bank of America is committed to empowering the Latino community through financial education and providing them the option of using safe, easy to use products and services that can help achieve their life goals,” said Leticia Aguilar, president of the Central Los Angeles market and consumer executive for the Greater Los Angeles and Central California division at Bank of America. “The ‘Educate to Activate’ campaign is another opportunity for Bank of America to provide much-needed, valuable financial education to this community, to help them find new ways to live a financially fit lifestyle.”
At a time when almost half of the Los Angeles County community is comprised of Latinos, the number of unbanked foreign-born Latinos nationwide remains at 42 percent (National Council of La Raza). In Los Angeles, 400,000 to 1 million of these consumers prefer using check-cashing and money-order businesses according to the Los Angeles Business Journal. As a result, they pay excessive fees and a high premium to access credit, cash checks and wire money services that are available at little or no cost at mainstream banks.
“Chivas USA is honored to partner with Bank of America for this important campaign,” stated Antonio Cue, Investor-Operator for Chivas USA. “While physical fitness is extremely important and vital to an overall healthy lifestyle, being ‘financially fit’ is just as important to improving overall quality of life, reducing financial burden and stress and enjoying the achievement of life goals and dreams.”
“For quite some time now, I have shared Bank of America’s vision of empowering Latino communities, and continue to support their efforts to educate Latinos on improving their financial status,” expressed Louis Barajas, personal finance expert and best-selling author of The Latino Journey to Financial Greatness. “I am very proud to be part of a worthy initiative that shares financial advice with Latinos and offers hope for a brighter future.”
