BORICUATÓN on Cinelatino

Cinelatino will host BORICUATÓN de Cinelatino, a marathon of popular Puerto Rican films, to celebrate Boricua culture in observance of this year’s Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York, one of the myriad festivals and parades cancelled amid the COVID-19 crisis. Now in its 63rd year, the parade is one of the signature events promoting Latino culture in the United States. In commemoration of the important tradition, the network will air a full day of back-to-back hits leading up to the Cinelatino premiere of “Vico C: La Vida del Filósofo.”

Hosted by WAPA’s Angelique “La Burbu” Burgos, the day will feature titles including Pepo Pa’l Senado, Aquí No ha Pasado Nada, La Cenicienta Boricua, Fuera de Tinieblas, plus the comedy hits ¡Qué Joyitas! II and the most successful Puerto Rican film in the island’s history, Los Domirriqueños. It will also include “King of Reggaeton” Daddy Yankee’s vehicle Talento de Barrio and the biopic Vico C: La Vida Del Filósofo.

Nicknamed the “Philosopher of Rap,” Puerto Rican Vico C is considered one of the pioneers of Spanish hip hop and reggaeton and is credited as one of the most influential artists in the development and widespread popularity of both genres. The artist is depicted in the film by real-life son, Luis Armando Lozada, Jr., also known as “LoUPz.” An intimate journey through Vico C’s life, trials, and tribulations to become an international superstar and a trailblazer of urban music, the film premiered at the 2017 San Diego Film Festival and was #1 at the Puerto Rican box office for its first two weeks of release relying exclusively on word-of-mouth. It features remastered and re-recorded versions of the rapper’s top hits as well as the rerelease of commercially unavailable songs from his discography. Vico C and his son will also participate that Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. PT in a Cinelatino Instagram Live interview where they will discuss the film and answer questions from fans. Vico C: La Vida del Filósofo will air on Sunday, June 14th at 8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT.

BORICUATÓN de Cinelatino will include appearances by some of the films’ stars and tributes celebrating Puerto Rican culture, symbols, and traditions. “In light of the current nation-wide and global situation, providing a platform for marginalized and under-served communities is more critical than ever before. By showcasing films created by Puerto Rican filmmakers, we hope to take part in honoring and uplifting the Puerto Rican community.” said James M. McNamara, vice chairman of Hemisphere Media Group (“Hemisphere”), Cinelatino’s parent company. “Latino viewers are not monolithic, and our catalogue of contemporary Spanish-language hits provides the latitude to create dedicated programming that can appeal to various segments of our viewership.”
