Tres Cubanos Selected For New York International Fringe Festival.

Three Cuban-American Miami natives—all students at NYU’s Tisch School of Dramatic Arts–will make their New York off-Broadway stage debuted on August 13th, at 9:30 p.m., at the Eighth Annual New York International Fringe Festival in A Place Without Seasons, a full-length drama written by Marco Ramirez.

AmericArtes! is a multi-year Latin American festival weaving together the movement and the metaphor of the vibrant cultures of Latin America in a host of music, dance, theater, film, visual, and literary arts programs. Performances and events on the Kennedy Center’s main stages, Millennium Stage, and in the Terrace Gallery showcase the eclectic mix of regional cultures in Latin America, reflecting the indigenous African, Spanish, and Portuguese influences that flavor the unique arts of the Americas.

Latino Kings Of Hip Hop Tour.

Hip hop fans across the country will have the opportunity to see today’s top Latino hip hop artists perform together in the Latino Kings of Hip Hop Tour. The tour begins July 28, 2004 and will be headlined by multi-platinum artist Fat Joe along with his group, The Terror Squad, and will include artists Frankie J, Play-N-Skillz and Tony Sunshine.

Yo Soy Latina Goes Off-Broadway.

After a successful, three-year Off-Off Broadway run, a Latino Flavored Production, reaches new heights in a limited run on Off-Broadway this summer. La Verdadera Historia de Pedro Navaja (The True Story of Pedro Navaja) crosses the waters of the Caribbean following triumphant presentations in Puerto Rico at the Centro de Bellas Artes in Caguas and the Centro de Bellas Artes in San Juan. The Spanish-language musical blockbuster makes its Florida premiere in the Au-Rene Theatre at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Friday, June 18 at 9 p.m. and Saturday, June 19 at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The Alamo’s Racist Myth Of Heroism.

An award-winning journalist today blasted the new movie “The Alamo” as racist and perpetuating the myth of the Battle of the Alamo in San Antonio.

“The battle at the historic church in Texas was about independence from Mexico, but not about freedom. Just the opposite. It was a stand for slavery,” said Roger Hammer, author of “Hispanic America.”

L.A.tinos: A Walk on the East Side.

“L.A.tinos: A Walk on the East Side” takes us into the bustling streets of Los Angeles to meet the people who animate them and to allow us to share in a moment of their lives. The pictures; reminiscent of the work of early photographers Walker Evans, Atget and Martin Chambi; shifts away from the immediacy of news photography. The images, charged with symbolism and love, are also critical and sometimes coldly analytical, but not without a sense of humor. This first solo show by photojournalist Hector Mata is a fresh, surprising and uncompromising portrait of a community in which the visual artist himself is reflected.

Latin Visions: Mexican Artists Look @ Erotica Exhibition In Los Angeles.

The satellite exhibition of “Latin Visions: Mexican Artists Look at Erotica” will open April 3 through April 31 at the XART Gallery at Entertianium L.L.C. Motion Picture Studio in Los Angeles. This installment will feature the work of Baja California artists: Vidal Pinto Estrada, Joly Lacarra, Julieta Bartolini, Hugo Crosthwaite, Jose Lobo, Martin Tellez, Francisco Calbello, Moises Guerrero and Labrada. All are exhibiting with over fifty artists from all parts of Mexico in May in Acapulco in the groundbreaking exhibition, “Latin Visions: Mexican Artists Look at Erotica.”

Heritage Hispanic-American Style is a rich, entertaining cultural compendium of facts that surveys the vast Hispanic culture, from its birthplace in Spain to the lands of the new world where its language, religion, and customs greatly influence two continents, in a unique bilingual format.

Target Stores, Mervyn’s & HP Bring Chicano To San Diego.

Chicano, an unprecedented art exhibition, presented by Target Stores and Mervyn’s, sponsored by Hewlett-Packard Company will make its first visit to the Golden State at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) in San Diego, Calif., on May 30, 2004. Chicano is a five-year, 15-city national tour that is collectively made up of two major exhibits:
Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge, a traditional art exhibit, and Chicano Now: American Expressions, an interactive multimedia exhibit for families. Chicano will remain on display at MCASD through September 12, 2004.

Latino Life Experience Exhibit.

“Americanos: Latino Life in the United States,” will open at the de Saisset Museum at Santa Clara University on Jan. 17, 2004 and remain on view through March 14.

The exhibit presents an intimate portrait of the Latino community through the work of 30 prize-winning photographers. The 114 photographs in the exhibition are organized around themes such as family, community, work, and sports, and reflect the breadth and variety of the Latino experience.
