CC Going Spanish In Orlando.
January 7, 2005
According to Radio & Records magazine, Clear Channel proved that rumors of a format flip at its Oldies WEBG (Big 100.3)/Orlando were indeed correct. The station is now Tropical as “Rumba 100.3,” and the move gives Orlando its first full-signal Spanish-language FM. As Rumba, WEBG will compete head-on with Mega Communications’ 100kw WNUE (La Nueva Mega 98.1)/Titusville, FL, which has difficulty reaching the southern and western portions of the growing Orlando metropolitan area. Rumba is playing 5,000 songs in a row and featuring such core artists as Marc Anthony, Gilberto Santa Rosa, El Gran Combo and Victor Manuelle. WEBG’s flip to Tropical is part of Clear Channel’s Spanish-language programming initiative announced in September 2004. SVP/Hispanic Radio Alfredo Alonso — who had a hand in WNUE’s launch while President/CEO at Mega — is overseeing Rumba’s launch.
