The first of two qualifying soccer tournaments to determine the teams that advance to next year’s Copa Toyota Libertadores kicked into action on Fox Sports World Español on Wednesday, August 28, when live network coverage of the 2003 Pre-Pre Libertadores began at 4:00 p.m. PT/ 7:00 p.m. ET. Atlas and Toluca open the first series of matches and are two out of six Mexican club teams vying to advance to October’s Pre-Copa Toyota Libertadores.
The six competing teams from Mexico are divided into two groups: Group A, featuring Atlas, Toluca and Pachuca; and Group B, consisting of Cruz Azul, UNAM and Morelia. The winning teams will face Venezuela’ s Nacional Tachira and Estudiantes de Mérida at the Pre-Copa Toyota Libertadores. The Pre-Pre Libertadores tournament will be played in Los Angeles, California, with the exception of the opening game in Houston, Texas.
Coverage of the Pre-Copa Toyota Libertadores matches is tentatively scheduled to begin on Fox Sports World Español on October 8. A detailed Pre-Copa Toyota Libertadores broadcast schedule will be available on network’s website, fswe.com, shortly.
Fox Sports World Español has also acquired the exclusive broadcast rights to the 21-team Copa Sudamericana, the Southern Hemisphere’s newest club tournament. Ecuadorian teams Aucas and Barcelona open the tournament on Thursday, August 29, shown live on Fox Sports World Español at 1:00 p.m. PT/4:00 p.m. ET. All 40 games of the Copa Sudamericana, from the first leg of the elimination rounds through the final match on December 11, will be televised live on Fox Sports World Español.

The winner of the 2002 Copa Sudamericana will confront the winner of the 2002 Copa Toyota Libertadores, Olimpia of Paraguay, for a “grand final” in the Recopa Sudamericana in late December. Teams scheduled to play in Copa Sudamericana at press time include:

— Venezuela (2): Monaguas and Deportivo Tachira (San Cristóbal)
